Irish Wetland Bird Survey: Results of Waterbird Monitoring in Ireland
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ireland supports a high diversity and large numbers of high latitude-nesting waterfowl during the non-breeding season. Located at the southern edge of the major flyways of many species, its mild climate ensures that feeding is rarely interrupted by freezing conditions. Some species migrate here, while others use Ireland as a stopover site, while en route to more southerly wintering areas. We thus have an obligation to protect and conserve these species and the habitats they depend on, so that together with other countries along the various flyways, their populations are maintained. Waterbird populations on non-estuarine coasts in Ireland: results of the 2006/07 Non-Estuarine Coastal Waterbird Survey (NEWS)
The importance of Ireland’s wetlands for waterbirds is well documented (Crowe 2005, Boland & Crowe 2012), and the most recent population estimates indicate that more than one million wildfowl and waders winter in Ireland (Crowe et al. 2008). The Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) in Northern Ireland and Britain, together with the equivalent scheme in the Republic of Ireland, the Irish Wetland Bird Surv...
متن کاملEstimates of waterbird numbers wintering in Ireland , 2006 / 07 – 2010 / 11
Estimates of total bird numbers help to evaluate the importance of a site for a species within a national and international framework, and also the relative importance of each country for that species which helps to prioritise conservation action and management. Non-breeding waterbirds, which are generally gregarious in nature, have been used to identify the importance of more than 80 wetland s...
متن کاملLandscape-Level Associations of Wintering Waterbird Diversity and Abundance from Remotely Sensed Wetland Characteristics of Poyang Lake
Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater wetland in China, provides critical habitat for wintering waterbirds from the East Asian Flyway; however, landscape drivers of non-uniform bird diversity and abundance are not yet well understood. Using a winter 2006 waterbird survey, we examined the relationships among metrics of bird community diversity and abundance and landscape characteristics of 51 wetl...
متن کاملBiotic wetland connectivity—supporting a new approach for wetland policy
Wetlands are key habitats connected physically and socially with processes occurring over a much wider territory. The biotic connection through dispersal mechanisms among wetlands is of primary importance to wetland management and policies. However, traditional wetland conservation approaches are based on the preservation of isolated sites considered to be of special importance (typically owing...
متن کاملThe “Crex Crex” Lament: Estimating Landowners Willingness to Pay for Corncrake Conservation on Irish Farmland
This paper considers farmers willingness to pay (WTP) to conserve an endangered Irish farmland bird, the Corncrake (Crex crex). An Irish National Farm Survey (NFS) is used to produce individual farm-level WTP estimates for the year 2006. These figures are then aggregated to obtain a total value figure for the farming community of Corncrake conservation in Ireland. We focus on the willingness to...
